Police in Sri Lanka’s capital Colombo said on Wednesday that legal action would be taken against the main opposition party ‘Samagi Jana Balvegaya’ (SJB) for violating the COVID-19 guidelines by organizing an anti-government public meeting.
SJB had organized a public meeting in Colombo in which thousands of people protested against inflation and shortage of essential commodities. SJB MP Harsha de Silva said that most of their workers were stopped by the police from coming into the city by buses from outside districts and for this road blockades were put up.
Criticizing the government, party leader Sajith Premadasa said it was determined to end the “era of queues”. In recent months, people were seen queuing up to buy essential commodities and now long queues of consumers are also being seen at petrol pumps. Police spokesperson Nihal Thaladuwa told reporters, “We are in the process of taking legal action.”
He said that the protest was organized in violation of the guidelines to prevent the spread of the epidemic. The SJB alleges that the government issued health guidelines for political purposes to suppress the democratic voice.
