- Prime Minister Narendra Modi has reached Samarkand to attend the 22nd meeting of the Council of Heads of State of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization. On Friday, he will hold a bilateral meeting with the President of Russia.
- This will be the first time after the Corona epidemic that many leaders including PM Modi will meet each other at the SCO summit. Prime Minister Modi, Chinese President Xi Jinping, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Pakistan Prime Minister Shahbez Sharif are participating in this summit.
- Russian Ambassador to India Denis Alipov told news agency ANI that both PM Modi and Vladimir Putin are going to participate in the SCO summit. There will be a bilateral meeting between the two leaders.
- Russian news agency TASS quoted President’s aide Yuri Ushakov as saying that the Shanghai summit will also hold talks with Modi on the international agenda. Apart from this, talks will be held between the two leaders on all issues including strategic stability, the situation in the Asia Pacific region.
- Earlier, Modi and Putin met in the month of July. Last year i.e. in the year 2021, Putin visited India. During this, both the leaders had talks on all the issues. At the same time, during the Russia-Ukraine war, the two leaders talked about the ceasefire over the phone.
- Other leaders including Russian President Vladimir Putin, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Iranian President Ibrahim Raisi will also attend the SCO’s annual summit. Prime Minister Modi has visited Uzbekistan at the invitation of President Shavkat Mirziyoyev. Let us tell you that Uzbekistan is the current President of SCO.
- Before leaving for Samarkand, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in a statement that he looked forward to exchanging views on current issues within the grouping, on expanding and taking forward cooperation. Modi said, “At the SCO summit, I look forward to exchanging views on current, regional and international issues, expanding the SCO and further deepening the multi-faceted and mutually beneficial cooperation within the organisation.”
- Prime Minister Modi said, ‘Shanghai summit is expected to take many decisions for mutual cooperation in the fields of trade, economy, culture and tourism.’ Apart from this, he said that I will have bilateral meetings with some other leaders who will attend the summit.
- Modi is also expected to hold bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the summit, in which he will hold talks with leaders including Putin and Uzbekistan President Shavkat Mirziyoyev. However, there is no confirmation about his possible bilateral meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
- The SCO was started in Shanghai in June 2001 and has 8 full members, including its 6 founding members China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. India and Pakistan joined it as full members in the year 2017.
