Imran Khan in SCO Summit: Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan will make a two-day official visit to Tajikistan to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit and hold bilateral talks with the leadership there on mutual ties. The Foreign Office gave this information on Wednesday. Khan will attend the 20th SCO Council of Heads of State (SCO-CHS) summit in Dushanbe, the ministry said. The Foreign Office (FO) said he has been invited by Tajikistan’s President Emomali Rahman for a visit from September 16-17.
A high level delegation of ministers will also accompany Imran Khan (Imran Khan in Tajikistan). He had earlier participated in SCO-CHS held in Bishkek, Kyrgyz Republic on 13-14 June 2019 and SCO-CHS organized by Russia on 10 November 2020 through video-conference. It is believed that Pakistani officials can talk with Tajikistan on the refugee crisis in Afghanistan. Since the arrival of the Taliban, people are fleeing the country from neighboring countries. Of these, a large number of people have entered Pakistan.
India-Pakistan Permanent Member
The SCO is seen as an antidote to ‘NATO’. It is an eight-member economic and security alliance and has emerged as one of the largest inter-regional international organizations. India and Pakistan became its permanent members in 2017 (What in SCO Summit). The SCO was established in 2001 at a summit in Shanghai by the presidents of Russia, China, the Kyrgyz Republic, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.
Which countries are associated with SCO?
The SCO also has four observer countries – Iran, Mongolia, Belarus and Afghanistan – besides its six dialogue partners – Azerbaijan, Armenia, Cambodia, Nepal, Turkey and Sri Lanka (SCO Members). It has been told by the Foreign Office that Khan will also hold bilateral meetings with other participating leaders on the sidelines of the main event. On the other hand, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will digitally lead the Indian delegation to the annual summit meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) to be held on September 17 in Dushanbe, capital of Tajikistan. The Ministry of External Affairs has given this information. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar will visit Dushanbe for SCO meetings.
