Ukraine (Ukraine) International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEI) that two of the six reactors of the country’s largest Zaporizhia nuclear power plant are working and the radiation level is normal. IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi gave this information. The Russian army for control of this plant located in the south-east of the country (Russian Military) had attacked a few days ago. Grossi said in a statement on Saturday that Ukraine’s regulatory authority and plant management told the UN’s nuclear watchdog that the technical security system was intact and that one telephone communication line was broken, but the other was still operating.
“Ukrainian officials told the IAEA that the plant’s training center, located separate from the reactor units, suffered significant damage during the March 4 attacks,” the statement said. An administrative structure has also been damaged. According to the IAEA, security systems at three other Ukrainian nuclear power plants are working and the regulator is continuously receiving online monitoring data about radiation levels at the plants.
The Chernobyl nuclear power plant has been under Russian occupation since last week
The regulator said that six of its nine reactors are currently in working condition. The regulator said the Chernobyl nuclear power plant has been under Russian occupation since last week, but technical staff and guards have not been rested since February 23. Grossi stressed the need to give rest to workers operating Ukraine’s nuclear plants so that they can do their jobs safely.
The possibility of a Chernobyl-like radioactive material leak is of great concern following recent reports of Russian shelling on the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant. Zaporizhzhya is the largest nuclear plant in Europe. Several security personnel at the plant have been injured in the Russian attack. There are six large nuclear power reactors in this plant and as such there is a large amount of nuclear material. These reactors are not like the Chernobyl plant and have a much safer design, but this does not reduce the risk of their safety during war.
Russian forces seize large part of nuclear plant
The building that was attacked is located about 500 meters from the block of six reactors. It does not contain any nuclear material, as it was used only for training and administrative purposes. There has been no sign of an increase in the radiation level after this attack. All reactors are occupied by Ukrainian personnel, but Russian forces have seized large parts of the nuclear plant. Looking at the CCTV footage, it does not appear that it was a deliberate attack. Russian forces are indicating that they can strike the plant at any time, but for the time being they are choosing not to do so. The fire may be extinguished soon, but the danger of what will happen next is greater than ever.
