The 74-year-old Rabuka was nominated as prime minister after a one-vote victory at a meeting of Fiji’s parliament in Suva. The tri-party alliance had announced its intention to form the government on Tuesday with a total of 29 seats. Outgoing Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama’s Fiji First party has 26 seats. Bainimarama remained on the post of Prime Minister of Fiji for almost 16 years. Rabuka was elected prime minister on Saturday by 28 votes against 27 in a secret vote of parliamentarians. These results show that a member of the new ruling coalition was against changing the prime minister. Rabuka was the Prime Minister from 1992 to 1999. He led two coups in 1987.
Hung election in Fiji
After the election of the hung parliament, the uproar that continued for 10 days has come to an end with the appointment of Rabuka. Fiji’s Social Democratic Liberal Party (SODELPA) voted on Friday to form a coalition with Rabuka’s People’s Alliance and the National Federation Party. The deal was designed to oust Fiji First’s Frank Bainimarama, who has led the Pacific island nation since a 2006 coup.
Rabuka is in favor of western democracy
Fiji has been important to the strategically located South Pacific’s response to the growing competition for influence between China and the US. Rabuka has said that he is in favor of Western-style democracy. At a press conference earlier this month, SODELPA’s leader said he wanted Fiji’s foreign relations to be more closely aligned with those of Australia, New Zealand and some of the members of the Pacific Islands Forum. Fiji has a history of military coups, which Rabuka led in 1987.
