On 13 July 2021, terrorists targeted a bus carrying Chinese workers to the site of the Dasu Hydroelectric Project in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Ten Chinese workers, mostly engineers, were killed in the attack, while 26 others were seriously injured. According to ‘The Express Tribune’, the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) of Pakistan, headed by Finance Minister Shaukat Tarin, will decide the amount of compensation to be given to Chinese citizens. This amount can range from $ 46 million to $ 2.03 million.

The Dasu Hydropower Project is financed by the World Bank. The project does not come under the purview of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). According to the newspaper, the purpose of giving compensation to the victims of the terrorist attack is to remove the major rift in bilateral relations. Pakistan, which is facing economic crisis, has decided to pay compensation to Chinese citizens despite no legal or contractual obligation on the government. According to the report, China had lodged a strong protest against the attack on its citizens.
China canceled the meeting in protest
China also reportedly canceled a proposed meeting of the Joint Cooperation Committee of CPEC in protest of the incident. The report said that after the attack, Chinese contractors had also stopped the work related to the project (Pakistan Chinese Citizens Compensation). He had demanded compensation of up to $37 million for the victims. This amount was 500 percent more than the compensation amount given by the government in the event of a terrorist attack in China. The Pakistan government initially refused to consider the attack a terrorist act. He had tried to link the incident with the gas leak.
Pakistan admits to terror attack
Islamabad later accepted that it was a terrorist attack. China also sent a team of experts to Pakistan to investigate the incident. According to the report, four Pakistani civilians also lost their lives in the attack. However, the Imran Khan-led Pakistan government has not yet clarified whether the families of these citizens will also be entitled to compensation.
