Libya 18 bodies have been recovered from the former stronghold of the Islamic State group present in. Libyan officials have informed about this on Sunday. Authorities say they have found 18 bodies buried in a mass grave in a former stronghold of the Islamic State group off the coast of the conflict-ridden North African country. The Missing Persons Authority said in a statement that the bodies were found in the Saba area of the city of Sirte in central Libya. It has been said that the dead bodies have been taken to the local hospital.
Sirte, the birthplace of former dictator Muammar Gaddafi, fell under the control of Islamic State militants between 2015 and 2016. Militants affiliated with al-Qaeda have gained a foothold in oil-rich Libya amid the country’s chaos following a 2011 uprising and NATO’s intervention in the conflict.
Libyan army had driven the terrorists out of the city
The terrorists were finally pushed out of the city in December 2016 by the Libyan army. At that time, the Libyan army was supported by the United States and the United Nations-backed government in the capital Tripoli. Hundreds of alleged former Islamic State fighters are languishing in Libyan prisons, many awaiting trial. Since Gaddafi’s coup and assassination, Libya has been divided between rival authorities. Sirte is now controlled by forces loyal to Khalifa Hifter, the military leader based in the east of the country.
The Missing Persons Authority said in its statement that they have collected bone samples of the bodies to identify the bodies. Recently several mass graves have been discovered throughout Libya. In October, officials said they had found 42 bodies in a mass grave at a school site in Sirte.
