In a letter published on his Twitter account, Prince Hamza said that what he has seen in recent years has made it difficult for him to support the policies adopted by Jordanian entities. Expressing his dismay, he wrote, “I have come to the conclusion that the personal beliefs and principles my father (the late Sultan Hussein) gave me are not in line with the way, instructions and modern methods of our institutions follow.”
Former Crown Prince Hamza arrested for conspiracy
Hamza, 42, was named Crown Prince when King Hussein died in 1999 when Abdullah became king, but he lost the title five years later when Abdullah named his son as his successor.
Last year, former Crown Prince Hamza was placed under house arrest after being accused of corruption and authoritarian rule. The controversy shook Jordan’s reputation as a haven of stability in the unpredictable Middle East. A former royal chief adviser and a minor royal were sentenced to 15 years in prison for their alleged involvement in an alleged conspiracy to later bring Hamza to power.
Hamza issued an apology last month in which he vowed not to act against the interests of Jordan’s rulers. His statement released on Sunday was brief, saying he would continue to serve Jordan without mentioning any future role for the king or in his personal life. However, at the time of King Hussein’s death he was considered too young and inexperienced as the successor. Due to which King Abdullah took the throne and in 2004 stripped Hamza of the title of Crown Prince.
