Rockets have once again been fired from the Gaza Strip towards Israel. The Israeli military said that Palestinian militias carried out a rocket attack from the Gaza Strip on Sunday night. It said the rocket was shot down by a missile defense system. The rocket attack comes at a time when tensions remain high over the escape of six Palestinian prisoners from an Israeli prison last week and the 11-day war in May.
Israel recaptured four of the six absconding prisoners over the weekend and intensified search operations to find the two remaining prisoners. In response, the militia stationed in Gaza has launched rocket attacks on Israel for three consecutive nights. Israel usually responds to rocket attacks through airstrikes on targets linked to Gaza’s ruling extremist organization Hamas. Tensions have been heightened by difficulties in reaching a long-term ceasefire between Israel and Hamas after the war in May.
There is also a dispute between Israel and Hamas regarding these issues
Egypt is trying to bring both sides to an agreement. Hamas has demanded that Israel lift the economic blockade on Gaza. At the same time, Israel wants Hamas to release two Israeli civilians and return the remains of two dead Israeli soldiers. Israel and Hamas have also failed to agree on a system to allow thousands of Gaza families to make welfare payments to Qatar. Israel says it wants guarantees from Hamas on payments to be made by Qatar. In this, Hamas should guarantee that the funds will not be used for military work.
Israel targeted Hamas targets last week
Earlier, Israel last week carried out airstrikes on a Hamas terrorist hideout in the Gaza Strip. Palestinians sent incendiary balloons to Israel in support of six Palestinian prisoners who had escaped from an Israeli prison. In response, Israel launched air strikes on Hamas targets on Tuesday. According to an army statement, fighter jets struck Hamas’s rocket manufacturing workshop in Khan Yunus as well as its military compound. The army said there was a cement factory in the compound, which was being used to build tunnels to carry out terrorist attacks. The complex is adjacent to a mosque and a water treatment site in a residential area.
