Israel has resumed airstrikes on the Gaza Strip, a region that had been peaceful for several months, but once again after rockets were fired from the Palestinian enclave of Ashkelonshahr in southern Israel. Air strikes have started from Earlier, information about air strikes in this area was received in April. US President Joe Biden is expected to meet with Israeli and Palestinian leaders during a visit to the region in July next month.
Palestinian media said an Israeli air strike targeted agricultural land in Gaza on Saturday, causing no damage. But, the Israeli military said it targeted military sites belonging to Hamas, which is part of the Palestinian group that rules the enclave.
No casualties have been confirmed
“In response to the rocket attack, Israeli Defense Forces aircraft struck several Hamas positions in the Gaza Strip,” the Israeli military said in a statement. However, there were no immediate reports of casualties in Gaza or Israel. There has also been no immediate response from Hamas, nor has any other group in the enclave claimed responsibility. However, a day after the airstrikes, Israel launched a military raid on Jenin in the occupied West Bank, killing three Palestinians and injuring 10. Apart from this, an Israeli observation balloon crashed in the northern Gaza Strip on Friday.
The Palestinian news agency Wafa has reported that the people killed in the attack have been identified as 24-year-old Bara Lahlouh, 23-year-old Yusuf Salah and 24-year-old Laith Abu Suroor. Hamas said one of those killed was a member of the Palestinian group Islamic Jihad.
There have been attacks in the Gaza Strip before
The last time there were rocket air strikes on the border was in April, when Israeli warplanes struck the Gaza Strip. On this, Israel said that it was a weapons manufacturing site related to Hamas. Although there were no signs of such airstrikes from across the border on Saturday, violence has escalated in recent months in Jerusalem, the occupied West Bank and Israel.
Palestinian Health Ministry gave information
According to the Palestinian Health Ministry, more than 60 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces this year, many of them killed in raids. Since March, 19 people have also been killed in Israel in the action of Palestinian attacks.
Al Jazeera journalist Shirin Abu Akleh was killed by Israeli forces in Jenin last month while she was covering an Israeli military operation. She was wearing a flak jacket emblazoned with the words “PRESS” when she was shot.
In May 2021, Israel attacked the besieged Gaza Strip for 11 days. Israeli air and artillery attacks killed 253 Palestinians, including 66 children, and injured more than 1,900 people. Children were among the 12 killed in Israel by rockets fired from Gaza by Hamas and other armed groups in retaliation. US-broker peace talks aimed at establishing a Palestinian state in East Jerusalem, the West Bank and Gaza collapsed in 2014 and show no sign of revival.
