Israeli aircraft carried out airstrikes on several targets in the Gaza Strip early Sunday after Palestinian militants fired rockets, a sign of rising tensions in the West Bank. Israel’s military said the airstrikes targeted an arms manufacturing facility and an underground tunnel belonging to the Palestinian militant group Hamas. Since 2007, Hamas has control over the Gaza area of Palestine. No Palestinian group claimed responsibility for Saturday evening’s rocket attack, which fell in an open area near the Gaza-Israel fence.
The border has been quiet since three days of clashes in August between Israel and Palestinian Islamic Jihad. Israel and Egypt have blockaded Gaza to prevent Hamas from accumulating weapons. Earlier on November 15, a Palestinian man stabbed two Israelis to death in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, then stole a car in an attempt to escape and rammed another vehicle on a nearby highway. In which the third Israeli person was killed. The attack took place in the Ariel settlement and three Israeli citizens were also injured in it.
More than 130 Palestinians died this year
After this, an Israeli soldier shot the Palestinian while he was trying to escape after the car crash. Israel captured East Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip as well as the West Bank during the 1967 West Asian war. Palestinians want the West Bank to be a core part of their country. Today the region is home to more than 2.5 million Palestinians and approximately 500,000 Jews. The Palestinians and much of the international community view the settlements as a violation of international law.
