India on Quad meeting: President Biden will organize the first quad summit held in Washington on September 24 in a direct manner, in which Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison, outgoing Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga will participate.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar

China’s concern has increased with the holding of the Quad summit to be held in the US later this month amid China’s increasing aggression in the South China Sea. China has rejected this alliance. However, after the Chinese rhetoric, India has also made its stand clear. India said that the agenda of the Quad is concrete and comprehensive, it should not be seen as a limited agenda. In fact, China on Tuesday targeted the upcoming Quad summit to be hosted by US President Joe Biden and said that ‘factionalism’ will not work to target other countries, the Quad has no future.

Although China was not mentioned in the talk said by India, but experts believe that India has given a befitting reply to China. Actually, China’s problem is that India is cooperating with France and Australia against aggressive Chinese behavior in the Indo-Pacific region. And now the quad (group of America, Japan, Australia and India) has also come to the fore regarding the Indo-Pacific region. The alliance of these countries will provide more diplomatic power against the increasing influence of China. This is also a cause of concern for China.

The need to move forward in an integrated manner in the Indo-Pacific region

Speaking to US-based academician Ashley Tellis about the Indian Ocean and its implications for regional security, Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said, “There is a need to move forward in a more integrated manner in the Indo-Pacific region and the changes expressed in the Quad I get a glimpse of it. Again I want to highlight the agenda of the Quad which is very comprehensive and cooperative. However, critics calling it a narrowing of its agenda shows their cunning in the global political game.

President Biden will host the first quad summit in Washington on September 24, in which Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison, outgoing Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga will participate.

Quad is not alone, many such alliances exist in the world

Jaishankar further said, ‘Without undermining the Quad, I want to state that the Quad is not alone, other multilateral alliances already exist in the world. Other multilateral alliances exist in the Indo-Pacific region as well. We also have such a multilateral alliance which means coming together of more than two systems, which is with Australia, Japan, France as well as Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Maldives.

Asked by the think tank’s representative about the fragmentation and integration of the region, EAM Jaishankar emphasized the cooperation shown by the Quad nations. He said, ‘Quad is an alliance striving for cooperation, which can be seen as an example, it is an effort of cooperation between four countries located on the four corners of the Indo-Pacific. All these countries are motivated by a sense of responsibility. We are working for global causes and are quite comfortable with each other. Each of us put in an extra effort, which was not predetermined. In fact, the recent times were a little different. We all tried to shun the attitude of global responsibility with a more open mind. East Asia Summit and ASEAN are also present as other efforts in this episode.

He also said that India was the first to react in the Indian Ocean region. He underlined that there was historically an organic unity in the Indian Ocean which today is very important for the countries of the Indian Ocean to remember and refresh.

China said – do not target third parties

On the upcoming summit of the Quad, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said that third parties should not be targeted through cooperation between countries. “China believes that any regional cooperation framework should be in tune with the trend of the times and conducive to mutual trust and cooperation between the countries of the region,” he said. Through this, no third party should be targeted or their interests should be harmed.

Lijian said there should be no “factionalism” to target other countries and that these methods will not work and have no future. “I want to mention that China is not only the engine of economic growth in the Asia-Pacific region, but it is also the main force defending peace,” he said.

Lijian said the countries concerned should abandon the concept of cold war mentality and narrow-minded geopolitical rivalry. Must look right and respect the aspirations of the people in the region and do more for regional solidarity and cooperation.

Quad made in 2017

In November 2017, India, Japan, the US and Australia gave shape to a pending proposal for the formation of the Quad to develop a new strategy for keeping the vital sea route open in the Indo-Pacific. In March, President Biden held the Quad Summit digitally.
