None of the 2021 Science Nobel Laureates Are Women
Science Nobel Prize Winners: Male scientists have been selected for the 2021 Nobel Prize in Science. With women winning awards in the intervening few years, the same practice has now resumed. Regarding this, Mary Kay Feeney, Professor and Lincoln Professor of Ethics in Public Affairs at Arizona State University in the US, says that the 2020 Nobel Prize in Chemistry was awarded to Emmanuel Charpentier and Jennifer Dodna for developing the ‘genome editing’ method. had gone.
Andrea Ghez was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics for the discovery of black holes. Prior to this, all Nobel Prize winners in the field of science in 2019 were men (2021 Science Nobel Women). However, in 2018, biochemical engineer Francis Arnold won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry and Doanna Strickland in Physics. Strickland and Ghez are the third and fourth women to win the Nobel Prize in Physics. Prior to him, Marie Curie won the award in 1903 and Maria Goeppert Meier 60 years later.
Very few women won the award
Strickland said it was surprising to realize how few women have won the award. Women researchers have come a long way in the past century, but women are still not fully represented in fields such as science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM or STEM) (Women Nobel Prize Winners). Studies have found that women who persist in these areas have to face many obstacles in the way of progress. In male dominated areas, the bias becomes even deeper.
Improvements being made for several decades
Such stereotypes have traditionally been going on that women do not like maths or are not good at science. But studies suggest that girls and women avoid STEM education because of lack of educational policy, cultural context, stereotypes and ideals to follow (Women in STEP Field). Over the past several decades, efforts have been made to increase the representation of women in STEM fields such as educational reforms, individualized programs and breaking stereotypes. These efforts were successful and women are showing interest in STEM careers.
Women doing PhD in STEM field
Now more number of women are pursuing PhD in STEM field and are getting faculty positions. However, women have to face many institutional and infrastructural barriers in the way of making a career in the STEM field. Whereas in male dominated areas, they feel isolated (STEP Nobel Prize). However, universities, professional organizations and federal financiers have made efforts to plug many structural loopholes. These include making policies keeping in mind the family, removing pay discrepancies and adopting transparency in this regard.
