A North Korean man has been sentenced to death for distributing copies of Netflix’s hit web series Squid Game. His sentence will reportedly be executed by the firing squad. Other convicts involved in the case have been sentenced to life imprisonment and rigorous imprisonment for watching the show illegally.
Radio Free Asia (RFA) reported that ‘Smuggler’ acquired a copy of the show in China and brought it back to North Korea. There he allegedly sold copies of the show on USB flash drives.
School officials will also be punished for ‘mistake’, will work in the mine
Squid game has grabbed everyone’s attention with its excellent story. The 9-episode series tells the story of a group of desperate people who sign up to play mysterious children’s games hoping to win a hefty cash prize.
While sources say that the teachers and administrators of the school have been expelled as a punishment for the ‘omission’ and sent to work in the mines.
Children secretly watched web series in school
A law enforcement source told the RFA’s Korean service, “It all started last week when a high school student secretly bought a USB flash drive containing a South Korean drama squid game and was asked by one of his best friends in class. Saw together.”
The source said, “The friend told several other students who were interested in it, and he shared the flash drive with them. On getting information, they were caught by the censors at 109 Sangmu. The accused have been sentenced under the new law passed on ‘Elimination of Reactionary Thought and Culture’.
The law carries the maximum death penalty for viewing, possessing or distributing media in several countries, notably the US and South Korea.
The source also said that the government is dealing with the issue very seriously and the central committee has sacked the school principal, his youth secretary and his homeroom teacher. A resident of the province told the RFA that authorities have now started raiding markets for memory storage devices and video CDs containing foreign media.
More than 11 crore views on OTT platform
Another source says that after this incident all the residents are extremely scared as they will be punished ruthlessly for buying or selling memory storage devices, no matter how small.
The biggest series ever launched on Squid Game Netflix has been launched. The South Korean survival drama, which premiered on September 17, recently garnered 1110 million views on the OTT platform. Directed by Hwang Dong-hyuk, Squid Game surpassed Netflix’s popular English series Bridgerton, which garnered 82 million views in its first 28 days.
