Kristalina Georgieva was previously the CEO of the World Bank.
The head of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has claimed that the exact details of the incidents have not been given in the news alleging her role in data manipulation while she was a top World Bank official.
The statement came a day after IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva appeared before the agency’s executive board. The executive board is investigating allegations that World Bank employees were pressured in 2018 to change information that affected the business-climate rankings of China and other countries.
what Georgieva said
Countries were ranked in the bank’s ‘Doing Business’ report after evaluating their tax burden, bureaucratic constraints, regulatory systems and other business conditions. Governments were keen to get higher rankings in the report to attract investment. In a statement issued on Thursday, Georgieva said, “I am delighted that I have finally had the opportunity to explain my role in the Doing Business report to the IMF Board. ‘
In addition to this statement, Georgieva’s lawyers issued an 11-page statement given to the board on Wednesday in a meeting that lasted more than five hours. The board is going to meet again in this matter on Friday. Amid demands to resign from her post at the IMF, Georgieva has denied any wrongdoing in the matter.
IMF chief was made in 2019
He served as the Chief Executive Officer of the World Bank from January 2017 to September 2019, replacing Christine Lagarde, before occupying the top post at the 190-nation IMF. Lagarde is now the head of the European Central Bank.
The allegations of data manipulation came from a review by the Willimarhall law firm that alleged Georgieva pressured the bank’s economists to improve China’s rankings. This pressure was put on him when he and other bank officials were trying to persuade China to support the increase in funding resources of the World Bank.
