According to the US State Department, in 2020, a Pakistani anti-terrorism court convicted Makki in a terrorism financing case and sentenced him to prison. At the same time, China has put obstacles in the list of terrorists especially from Pakistan. It had repeatedly blocked proposals to nominate Maulana Masood Azhar, chief of Pakistan-based and UN-sanctioned terrorist organization Jaish-e-Mohammed. Although India was successful in this too.
