The ‘Brothers of Italy’ party has got the most votes in the Italian national election. The formation of the country’s first far-right-led government after World War II and the party’s leader Giorgia Meloni to become the country’s first woman prime minister seems to be paving the way. This information has come out from the election results so far. Right-wing leaders across Europe praised Meloni’s victory and his party’s rise as a historic message to Brussels. Giorgia Meloni’s party has won 114 seats while the majority figure is 104. The government is likely to be formed by the end of October.
On October 13, 200 senators and 400 MPs will gather in the Italian Parliament. Only after that the government will be formed. Then Prime Minister Mario Draghi will take over his responsibility as caretaker PM. According to the election results, the right-leaning coalition garnered about 44 percent of the parliamentary vote, while Meloni’s ‘Brothers of Italy’ got around 26 percent of the vote. The rest of the vote is shared by Meloni’s coalition partners, with Matteo Salvini’s anti-diaspora league getting around 9 percent and former prime minister Silvio Berlusconi’s Forza Italia about eight percent.
26 percent of the vote for the Democratic Party
The left-leaning Democratic Party and its allies got about 26 percent of the vote, while the 5-Star Movement got about 15 percent of the vote. The 5-Star Movement got the largest share of votes in the 2018 parliamentary elections. Voter turnout was recorded at around 64 per cent, which is the lowest historically. Pollsters indicated that voters did not come out of their homes to vote in protest and also because they were disenchanted with behind-the-scenes consent to the formation of three governments since the last election.
Will run the government keeping the citizens in mind
Meloni said, ‘If we are invited to rule this country, we will run the government with all the citizens of Italy in mind. We will do this with the aim of uniting all the citizens (of this country). Italy has chosen us. We will never cheat (the country), as we have never done before. Formation of the government would still take several weeks and would involve consultation with party leaders and President Sergio Mattarella. Meanwhile, outgoing Prime Minister Mario Draghi remains in the role of a caretaker prime minister.
