Pakistan’s intelligence agency ‘Inter-Services Intelligence’ or say former ISI chief Lt Gen Faiz Hameed can become the Pakistan Army Chief. This discussion has intensified since the head of the global terrorist organization Haqqani Network, Sirajuddin Haqqani, was given a major post in Afghanistan. Recently, Faiz Hameed has been made the XI Corps Commander in Peshawar.
According to the Hindustan Times report, Faiz Hameed may replace his fellow Baloch Regiment senior General Qamar Javed Bajwa and become the next chief of the Pakistan Army in 2022. General Bajwa is set to complete his six-year term as Pakistan Army Chief in November 2022. In fact, according to Pakistan watchers, Lt Gen Faiz Hameed has been made Peshawar Corps Commander, as it is mandatory for the candidates for the post of Pakistan Army Chief to command a Corps level formation for at least one year.
General Bajwa can extend his tenure
General Hameed commanded an infantry division at Pano Aqeel in Sindh province between 2015-2017. After this, there was staff posting in Rawalpindi GHQ. He was the 24th chief of the ISI and has now been replaced by Lt Gen Nadeem Anjum, the former commander of the Karachi Corps. Those who watch the Pakistani army believe that General Bajwa can extend his term for another two years in November 2022. At the same time, it is also discussed that due to Faiz Hameed, Pakistan has got an edge in the proxy Taliban government in Afghanistan. As a result of this, he has been given the command of the prestigious Peshawar Corps.
Taliban return to power due to ISI
At the same time, there is no doubt that Pakistan’s intelligence agency had a major role in the return of the Taliban to power. The ISI not only provided the Taliban with tactics, arms, ammunition and medical support, but it also helped crush the resistance built up against the Taliban in Panjshir. On the other hand, General Hameed as the commander of Peshawar Corps, Miramshah Shura of the Taliban, will be in direct contact with the Haqqaniya Madrasa at Akora Khattak in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and will also be a part of talks with the Tehreek-e-Taliban, Pakistan. The Peshawar Corps controls the Khyber Pass on the Afghanistan-Pakistan border and also monitors the Wakhan Corridor, which leads to Xinjiang.
