Mohandas Karamchanj Gandhi is often held responsible for the partition of India. Many people, especially Gandhi’s critics, accuse him of Muslim appeasement.
It is also common on Gandhiji that he helped Muhammad Ali Jinnah to create a separate country for Muslims, Pakistan. MK Gandhi has always been accused of being pro-Muslim and pro-Pakistan.
Gandhi usually went to Pakistan seven times but his visit to Pakistan should not be seen in the context that he was actually a pro-Muslim or Jinnah’s Pakistan politics and helped him to create Pakistan. His policy of non-violence should not be seen in the context of a violent politics.
When Jinnah actively raised his voice for Pakistan and due to this there were many riots in the areas of India and Pakistan and Gandhi visited those areas as far as possible and insisted on ending the violence.
Gandhi went on a tour of Pakistan even after Partition and then mainly visited Lahore, Rawalpindi and Karachi. Even today in Pakistan that building is present in the name of Swaraj Bhawan, where Gandhi used to stay but that building was not taken care of and is completely dilapidated. Gandhi was a leader of both Hindu and Muslim and he never compromised with his policy of non-violence.
Appreciating Gandhi’s services to the people and acknowledging his greatness, a garden in Karachi was also named after him. It is considered to be the largest garden of British times and it extends to where the British East India Company established its first factory in 1799.
Before 1934, this garden was called Victoria Garden. However, when Mahatma Gandhi visited Karachi in 1934, he was given a grand welcome in the same garden. It was arranged by the Karachi Municipal Corporation. During that time it was announced that Victoria Garden would now be known as Mahatma Gandhi Garden.
This can be taken as proof that the names of places and roads have been changed even during Akhand Bharat (before partition). The interesting thing is that Gandhiji did not disagree with the decision to name Victoria Garden after him then.
However, after independence, the names of many such buildings in Pakistan were changed, which were named after non-Muslims or Britishers. Gandhi’s statue was installed in many different areas of Pakistan, which was removed by Pakistan after independence.
Gandhiji was exiled from Pakistan along with his statue, but still there is still a statue of Gandhi in the tire street of Karachi. Gandhi still resides in Pakistan’s Karachi Chambers of Commerce which he inaugurated on 6 July 1938.
His picture is still hanging in the railing in the dilapidated building located in the street known as Ek Tire Gali in Karachi.
