A Maldivian court on Sunday sentenced former President Abdulla Yameen to 11 years in prison after finding him guilty of money laundering and corruption.
Seven years for money laundering and four years for taking bribe
Maldivian criminal court also imposed a fine of $5 million on Yameen. The court had found Yameen guilty of accepting a bribe in return for the lease of an island owned by the government. Yameen was the President of Maldives from 2013 to 2018. The court sentenced the former president to seven years for money laundering and four years for taking bribes.
This is not the first time Yameen has been found guilty. In a separate case in 2019, Yameen was found guilty of money laundering and sentenced to five years in prison. However, two years later the Supreme Court overturned the verdict, saying there were inconsistencies in the evidence and it did not conclusively prove that Yameen had laundered $1 million in government funds for personal gain.
