South Korea’s new President Eun Suk Yeol has also talked about relations with North Korea after taking office. He said that if North Korea agreed to denuclearize, he would present a strong plan to improve its economy.
‘Doors of talks with North Korea will remain open’
Eun Suk Yeol said at his swearing-in ceremony in Seoul on Tuesday that the doors of dialogue to deal with North Korea’s nuclear threats would remain open. He said his government was ready to work with the international community to present a robust plan that would significantly strengthen North Korea’s economy and improve the livelihoods of its citizens.
North Korea has previously rejected the proposal
Yoon, who has always taken a strong stance against North Korea, in his address appeared to avoid giving any strong message against the concerns raised about North Korea’s nuclear test preparedness. Meanwhile, former South Korean President Moon Jae-in, defending his policy of talks with North Korea, said in his farewell address on Monday that he expected efforts to restore peace and denuclearization on the Korean peninsula would continue.
Moon Jae-in stepped down on Tuesday after five years in office and handed over presidential powers and responsibilities to conservative Yun Suk Yeol. Eun Suk Yeol has accused Moon of being subordinate to North Korea and promised to take a tough stand on North Korea’s nuclear program.

Moon said in his address, “Peace is a condition of our existence and prosperity.” I hope that efforts will continue to resume talks between South and North Korea, and to denuclearize and establish peace.
