The Delta variant of Coronavirus has emerged as the most infectious variant. Millions of people have been infected due to the rapid spread of this variant worldwide. Due to the delta variant, lockdown has been imposed in many countries. In such a situation, the question has also been raised whether the Delta variant is very bad for the children? Regarding the answer to this question, experts say that there is no strong evidence that the delta variant makes children and adolescents sicker than the earlier version of the virus.
However, due to the delta variant, there has been an increase in infection among children and it is more contagious. The delta’s ability to spread more easily makes it more dangerous for children, said Dr Juan Dumois, a pediatric infectious doctor at Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital in St. Petersburg, Florida. For this reason, it is very important to wear masks in schools and vaccinate those who are old. Earlier this month, the weekly infection rate among US children topped 250,000, higher than the winter peak, according to data from the American Academy of Pediatrics and Children’s Hospital Association.
Delta variant has spread to 180 countries
Since the start of the coronavirus pandemic, more than 5 million children have been infected in the US so far. According to the World Health Organization, delta variants have been identified in at least 180 countries. In many of them, the rise in infections also means an increase in the number of hospitalizations among young children and adolescents. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the hospitalization rate due to COVID in the US in late August and early September was just two per 100,000 children, compared to the peak time of last winter. But there is no significant change in the share of children hospitalized due to serious illness.
Corona vaccine is effective against delta variants
Looking at the large numbers, it may seem that children are getting sick due to the Delta variant. But experts say that doesn’t seem to be the case. Most infected children have mild symptoms and/or no symptoms. In this case, they do not need to be admitted to the hospital. Coronavirus vaccines are effective in providing protection against delta variants. The weekly hospitalization rate in July among children 12 years of age or older was 10 times higher than those who had received at least one dose of the vaccine.
