Jiao Yahui, a senior official of the National Health Commission, told that 5503 people died due to respiratory problems and 54,435 people died due to other diseases along with COVID-19. The commission said that these deaths occurred in hospitals. Due to this there is also a possibility that people would have died in their homes as well.
China had stopped giving the figures of deaths
The Chinese government stopped reporting Covid-19 cases and deaths in early December after abruptly lifting anti-epidemic measures. WHO had asked China to give more information about this. According to the news of the Hong Kong newspaper South China Morning Post, the average age of those who died is 80.3 years and 90 percent of the dead were 65 or older.
