The second black box was in the rear of the plane and is being described as the ‘Flight Data Recorder’ (FDR). The FDR records the aircraft’s speed, altitude and direction, as well as the actions taken by the pilot and the performance of critical systems. China Eastern Airlines flight MU5735, which had reached an altitude of 9,075 feet within two minutes and 15 seconds from an altitude of about 29,100 feet, crashed in a mountainous area, waiting to receive the CVR.

Zhu Tao, the head of the Aircraft Safety Office of the Civil Aviation Administration of China, said at present the possibility that the data storage unit of the CVR may have been destroyed cannot be ruled out. China’s Ministry of Transport said that China Eastern has closed all its Boeing 737-800s. This is a move that could further disrupt domestic air travel, as it has already been halted due to the outbreak of COVID-19 in China in early 2020.
