Sixth incident after May 22
The spokesman said it was the sixth such incident since May 22 in which UN peacekeepers have been targeted and the second fatal attack on a convoy this week. Significantly, earlier on Wednesday, a convoy of peacekeepers was attacked by suspected terrorists in the North Kidal region, in which a Jordanian peacekeeper was killed and three others were injured.
The attack happened two days ago too.
Just two days earlier, on Thursday, it was reported that a convoy of UN peacekeepers in northern Mali was attacked by suspected terrorists on Wednesday, killing a Jordanian peacekeeper and injuring three other Jordanian peacekeepers. The United Nations had given this information. UN Secretary-General’s spokesman Stephane Dujarric said the convoy was attacked for about an hour by attackers using small arms and rocket launchers. Dujarric said UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres strongly condemned the attack and expressed his deepest condolences to the families of the peacekeepers, the government and people of Jordan. According to the UN peacekeeping mission in Mali, this is the fifth attack in a week in Mali’s northern Kidal region, he said.
Conflict since 2012 due to Islamic fundamentalism
Significantly, since 2012, the struggle to stop Islamic fundamentalist extremism has been going on in Mali. Militant rebels were driven out of Mali’s northern cities with the help of a French-led military campaign, but they regrouped in the desert area and launched attacks on Mali’s army and its allies. The situation has now worsened with attacks on civilians and UN peacekeepers in the northern and central regions. Mali’s army once again captured Kidal in February 2020 after nearly six years of conflict. UN peacekeepers have also been deployed in the northern region. The UN force said more than 250 of its peacekeepers and personnel have been killed since 2013.
