America is restoring economic relations with Syria.
The US has taken a big step in the Middle East. US President Donald Trump has signed the executive order, relaxing the strict economic restrictions on Syria. This is the same Syria which was once at the top of the American hit list. Now the Trump administration is asking to give it a new opportunity. This decision has come at a time when Iran is trying to increase its dominance in the Middle East.
After meeting Syrian interim leader Ahmed al-Shra in Saudi Arabia in May, Trump promised that if Syria would move forward on the path of peace, the US would restore economic relations with him. Now, while playing the same promise, Trump has started removing the 50 -year -old restrictions from Syria. This simply means Syria can now become the new middle East base of America and for Iran it is no less than a nightmare.
Investment rain, Iran's concern increased
According to the US Treasury Department, this decision has been taken with the intention of connecting Syria with the international financial system, promoting investment and including neighboring countries. The European Union has also removed most of the restrictions from Syria following the path of America. That is, a new political and economic alliances are emerging in the Middle East, in which Iran may be isolated.
But some restrictions still maintained
However, the restrictions will still remain under the Caesar Act on former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and his close ones. These people are accused of human rights abuses, drugs smuggling and chemical weapons related activities. Only the US Parliament can end this act. Apart from this, restrictions will also remain on terrorist organizations and drugs (especially Capatagon).
Trump's move does not normalize the relationship between America and Syria. Syria is still marked as a sponsor of terrorism and the 'foreign terrorist organization' of the country and the al-show. The US State Department is reviewing these tags. That is, the entire door of friendship is not open right now, but the window has definitely been opened.
