Afghan Sikhs in bad condition under Taliban rule! People forced to choose one option in ‘Change religion or leave the country’

The security system in Afghanistan has been deteriorating since the occupation of the Taliban. In such a situation, along with the majority society living there, the condition of minority Hindus and Sikhs is deteriorating. Even before the fall of the government, their situation in Afghanistan was very bad. At the same time, now a report says that Sikhs have to choose between the options of adopting Sunni Islam or fleeing to Afghanistan. This report has come to the fore at a time when Taliban fighters had entered the Gurudwara in Kabul just a few days ago.

The International Forum for Rights and Security (IFFRAS) said, ‘For a time, the number of people of the Sikh community in Afghanistan used to be in the tens of thousands. But their condition is worse due to migration and deaths from Afghanistan. This has happened because of systemic discrimination and radical violence in Afghanistan. A large number of Sikhs live in Kabul while some live in Ghazni and Nangarhar provinces. On October 5, 15 to 20 fighters entered the gurdwara and took the guards hostage. This attack took place in Karate-e-Parwan district of Kabul. Sikhs in Afghanistan often face such attacks and violence in the country.

There have been many attacks against Sikhs

In recent years, there have been many violent anti-Sikh attacks in Afghanistan. An Afghan Sikh leader was allegedly kidnapped by ‘terrorists’ in June last year. The sources did not disclose further details about the case. In March 2019, another Sikh man was kidnapped and murdered in Kabul. Later, the Afghan police arrested two suspects. While in Kandahar another unidentified gunmen shot another Sikh man.

Sikh people are being converted

The Sikh community has been living in Afghanistan for centuries, but for decades, the Afghan government has failed to provide adequate housing to the Sikhs and restore their homes. In fact, during the 1990s, their neighbors and warlords had illegally occupied the homes of Sikhs. IFFRAS said that since the massacre of Sikhs by the Taliban at a gurdwara in Kabul on March 26, 2020, a large number of people of the community have been going to India. Further, the forum pointed out that the people of the Sikh community do not come under the mainstream of the Sunni sect, so they are either forcibly converted to Islam or murdered.
