Broadband Speed in India: According to the data till 30 November 2022, there are 825 million broadband users in India. Of these, 793 million users use wireless broadband connectivity. With the new rule of the government, users will now be able to run internet at a speed of 2 Mbps.

Government changed the definition of broadband
According to the notification, “Broadband is a data connection that may support interactive services, including Internet access and with the capability of providing a minimum download speed of 2Mbps to an individual subscriber from a point of presence (POP) of a service provider .” According to the data of 30 November 2022, there are 82.5 crore broadband users in India, out of which 79.3 crore users use wireless broadband connection.

TRAI had recommended
In August 2021, TRAI recommended that “the definition of broadband be reviewed and the minimum download speed for broadband connectivity be increased from the existing 512 kbps to 2 Mbps. On the basis of download speed, fixed broadband is divided into three different categories – Basic, Fast and Super Fast.
Speedtest Global Index: India’s big jump
According to Ookla’s Speedtest Global Index for the month of December 2022, India recorded an average mobile download speed of 25.29 Mbps, up from 18.26 Mbps in November 2022. Ookla said in a statement on January 27, 2023, “With this, the country has made a big jump in the global ranking from 105th position in November to 79th now.”
