In a statement on Sunday, Dream11 said, “To address the concerns of our users, we have decided to suspend operations in Karnataka. This decision is within our rights and within the law.” Dream11 provides a fantasy gaming platform for many different games. It became the first gaming startup in India last year to be valued at over $1 billion (about Rs 7,535 crore). It has faced legal challenges for some time now due to the fact that both fantasy gaming and gambling are alike.
A law has been implemented in the state of Karnataka last week. It bans betting and online betting games. At the same time, it also bans any such act that puts money at risk, or any game or skill, the result of which is not known.
A spokesperson for Dream11 said on Saturday that the company is investigating what measures we can take legally. “We are a responsible, law-abiding company and we will extend our full cooperation to any authority,” the company said.
