However, with the start of 2022, BlackBerry will end support for its smartphones. Yes, BlackBerry on Thursday announced that it is going to end support for all classic BlackBerry OS and BlackBerry 10 powered smartphones. The company has warned customers who are still using phones running its software that it will not be able to support legacy services over cellular and Wi-Fi connectivity from a few days onwards.
This means that even basic functions like calls, cellular data, SMS and emergency calls can stop working on the BlackBerry phone. It is worth noting here that this change will not affect BlackBerry smartphones running Android. The company will officially end support for BlackBerry OS and BlackBerry 10-powered smartphones on January 4, 2022.
Blackberry phones will not work from January 4
“As a reminder, legacy services for BlackBerry 7.1 OS and earlier BlackBerry 10 software, BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.1 and earlier versions will no longer be available after January 4, 2022. As of this date, devices running these legacy services and software will no longer function reliably through either a carrier or Wi-Fi connection, including data, phone calls, SMS and 9-1-1 functionality.” BlackBerry said in its announcement.
However, in February 2020, TCL announced that it would no longer produce BlackBerry phones. The company’s last phone launch was BlackBerry KEY2 LE. In 2020, Texas-based startup OnwardMobility released a teaser to launch a 5G Blackberry phone in 2021. Although this model has not surfaced yet.
Back up data for BlackBerry smartphone users
Those who are still using Blackberry smartphone are advised to back up all their data as soon as possible. Blackberry, a brand that still had the same popularity as the Apple iPhone, was one of the most sought after smartphones back then. Blackberry was known for its encryption and almost a decade ago it was the preferred choice for security conscious users or even high profile users.
