After winning the bronze medal in the Tokyo Olympics, Bajrang Punia is away from the wrestling mat these days. Bajrang suffered an injury while playing in the Ali Aliyev tournament in Russia in June ahead of the Tokyo Games. Bajrang withdrew from the semi-final match against Abdulmajid Kudiyev in that tournament. Despite this, he managed to win bronze in the 64kg category at the Olympics.
Due to injury, he is not taking part in the trials being held in Delhi for the World Championship. Doctors have asked him to stay away from wrestling for four weeks. Despite this, he reached the national trials. He did not come there to play the match but to help his wife and wrestler Sangeeta Phogat who was participating in the trials.
Bajrang became coach for wife
Bajrang Punia’s wife Sangeeta Phogat is also a wrestler. She belongs to the strong Phogat Wrestling family of the country which has given wrestlers like Geeta and Babita Phogat to the country. Bajrang Punia was seen giving him tips during the trial match on Tuesday. He was also encouraging Sangeeta by sitting near the mat and appeared in the role of a coach during the break. Bajrang’s tips also showed the effect and Sangeeta won all the matches of the 62 kg trials. She will take part in the World Championships to be held in October.
Bajrang may request for trial again
Bronze medalist and India’s star wrestler Bajrang Punia on Monday said he can request a re-trial in his category before the World Championships after recovering from the injury. He had recently said, ’15 days after my knee injury, my left leg muscle was also strained but I decided to keep quiet and play with the injury. I am in the process of regaining fitness and feel like I will be fit before the World Championships. If this happens, I will request the federation to give me a chance to try again.
Sangeeta and Bajrang have done love marriage. The love of both started in the national camp. Bajrang was in love with Sangeeta at first sight. The two first became friends and then Bajrang spoke his heart to Sangeeta. With the consent of the family, both of them got married in November last year. This marriage was completed during the Corona period with 21 baraatis. This marriage took place only in the presence of family members in a simple ceremony.
