Gibbs was accompanied by four other players, Paul Adams, Roger Telemkhus, Andre Knell and Justin Camp, staying together in a hotel room in Antigua. All these players had drank ganja. All were caught in a drunken state. The South African board imposed a fine of 10,000 South African rands on other players, including Gibbs. Gibbs also had to face a six-month ban. Earlier, he had also faced a ban on fixing charges.

The match was played under the influence of alcohol

This was not the first time that Herschelle Gibbs had played such a drunken match. In the year 2005, in an exciting match against Australia, he played an innings after drinking alcohol. Batting first, Australia had set a challenge of 435 runs in front of South Africa. In reply, South Africa won by scoring 438 runs for the loss of 9 wickets, thanks to Gibbs’ 175 off 111 balls.
