According to the report of news agency PTI, left-arm fast bowler Ravi Kumar and opener Angkrish Raghuvanshi, who played an important role in winning the World Cup, were among the players who did not get the corona vaccine. They were asked to return to India from the airport itself. Team manager Lobjang Ji Tenzing then resolved the matter with the help of ICC and BCCI officials. Simultaneously, the Government of India and Trinidad also had to intervene. Tenzing, the head of the Sikkim Cricket Association, told PTI about the incident. They said,
After landing in Port of Spain, we had to take a charter flight to Guyana. But seven of our boys were stopped because they had not vaccinated. We tried to convince the immigration officials. Told that India has not yet started vaccination (in people below 18 years). But they asked us to return on the next flight itself.
January’s event
This incident happened in the first week of January. Then India had just started vaccination for people aged 15-18. Tenzing continued,
We were surrounded by the security personnel of the airlines as if we would run away. And while talks were on with the airline and immigration officials, the Lufthansa flight also took off. That was the only flight back. Then three days later there was the next flight. This gave us time to talk to the local authorities. I decided to stay with the boys. We had to stay overnight in a decent hotel near the airport. The matter was resolved after the intervention of the ICC and the local government. It was a scary experience for the boys.
