To deal with the uncertainty caused by the Kovid-19 pandemic, the NRAI has placed two reserve players in each category of quota.
Chinky Yadav (left) did not find a place in the Indian team of Tokyo Olympics. Elavenil Valarivan has been elected in his place.
Elavenil Valarivan, the world’s number one shooter, was inducted into the 15-member Indian squad selected for the Tokyo Olympics on Sunday. Chinki Yadav, who won the Olympic quota, has not got a place in the team. He won a gold medal in the Delhi World Cup last month. In shooting, the quota belongs to the country and not the shooter who achieves it. The National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) selection committee met in Delhi to announce the names of the 15 shooters representing the country in these games, to be held from July 23 to August 8 in the capital of Japan. It was decided that the quota achieved by Chinki in the 25 meter pistol category will be replaced with Anjum Modgil. Due to this, Anjum will get a chance to take part in the 50 meter rifle three position. She will be the second Indian player after Tejaswini Sawant in this category.
At present, the world number one shooter in the women’s 10 meter air rifle category, Elavenil could not achieve the Olympic quota. But in the last three-years, he has consistently performed well. Due to this, the NRAI included him in the team in place of Anjum in the 10 meter air rifle category. To deal with the uncertainty caused by the Kovid-19 epidemic, the NRAI has placed two reserve players in each category of quota. Talented Manu Bhakar has been placed in both the women’s air pistol events. He has been placed in the 25 meter pistol along with veteran Rahi Sarnobat while in the 10 meter pistol with Yashaswini Singh Deswal. Apart from this, she will also participate in the mixed event of 10 meter air pistol with Saurabh Chaudhary.
Selection was made on the basis of four years of performance
The NRAI selected the shooters based on their performance in the four-year Olympic qualifying cycle. It started with the 2018 Jakarta Asian Games. This was followed by the performance of the World Championship (both in 2018), all four World Cups and Asian Championships in 2019, and the first and second stage selections trials held earlier this year. According to the NRAI’s stated policy, the average five best scores in the international competition starting with the Jakarta Asian Games were taken into consideration when choosing the final team.
According to this, Indian shooters Anjum Modgil and Apoorvi Chandela, who got the first quota from the 2018 World Championships, will be fielded in the women’s rifle three position event along with Tejaswini Sawant. Apoorvi and Elavenil women will participate in the 10-meter air rifle event. Chinki and Anjum have been kept in reserve for the 25-meter pistol and rifle three-position event.
