It is said that Kaabil gets success. But it was not so with him. As wonderful as that player was and the records he had made in domestic cricket. His half was not even visible when he landed on the international pitch of cricket. The biggest tragedy of his cricket life was that he never lived up to the trust of the Indian selectors. Nor was his batting position ever the same in the team. In his Test career, this position kept changing from number 1 to number 8. This batsman was none other than Ashok Mankad, who played his first Test match for Team India at the age of 23, who would have been celebrating his 75th birthday if he was among us today. Born on 12 October 1946, Ashok Mankad, the eldest son of former cricketer Vinoo Mankad, died suddenly in the year 2008.

Well, Ashok Mankad made his debut for Team India in the year 1969. His steps in international cricket came from the test match. He played his first test against New Zealand. But his real game was seen in the home Test series against Australia. Right-handed batsman Ashok Mankad scored 4 half-centuries in 5 innings of this series. In the 5-Test series against Australia, Ashok Mankad scored 357 runs at an average of 35.70.

Frozen pair with Gavaskar on West Indies tour

After the series against Australia, the tour of West Indies in 1971 was also good for Ashok Mankad. On this tour, he opened with Sunil Gavaskar, on which apart from 3 half-century partnerships, he also made 1 century partnership. However, after this the tour of England was a failure for him. After that series, his career went downhill.

Played 22 Tests in 9 Years

Ashok Mankad played cricket for 9 years for India. During this, he could play only 22 Test matches, in which he scored 991 runs at a modest average of 25.41. His batting average in Test cricket is directly half of his first-class cricket average. In first class cricket, Ashok Mankad has scored 12980 runs at an average of 50.90. Ashok Mankad’s run-scorer average in Ranji cricket has been 76.08, where he has also scored 22 centuries.

Apart from playing 22 Test matches, Ashok Mankad has also played 1 ODI for India. In this only ODI, he scored 44 runs off 61 balls. He has scored 700 runs in 26 List A matches at an average of 46.44.
