Bobby Dhami was a part of Team India in the Junior Hockey World Cup. He also scored a goal in the tournament
Bobby Dhami hails from Uttarakhand
When Bobby Dhami took to the field against Belgium in the Junior Hockey World Cup, celebrations began in a small village in Uttarakhand’s Pitthoragarh district, miles away from Bhubaneshwar. Bobby Dhami’s parents saw their son playing hockey for the first time in 9 years. This success of the son also erased the fear and pain of the accident from the heart of the family, due to which he had to distance his 10-year-old son from himself.
Dhami was selected in the 20-man squad for the Junior Hockey World Cup. When Dhami came on the field wearing Team India’s jersey, the coach and his maternal uncle felt as if every prayer of his life had been accepted. Today he is representing the country in the World Cup due to an accident which had to leave Dhami home. He has become a hero not only for his village but for the entire state.
An accident changed Bobby’s world
Bobby’s father is today a laborer of MNREGA while his mother is a teacher. Bobby’s house runs from his mother’s salary. When Bobby was 10 years old, he lived with his family in Katyani, a small village in Pitthoragarh. His father then worked as a driver. One such day he was driving a cab when the brakes of the vehicle failed. He asked the people in the cab to jump. Dhami’s father Shyam Dhami survived but the other four people died. The families of those who died, filed a case against Shyam Dhami and demanded compensation. Due to this Dhami’s family had to lose everything.
Bobby’s maternal grandfather advised his mother to send his son to Tanakpur with his maternal uncle. It was not easy for a mother to take away a piece of her liver from herself but she could neither give Bobby a good education nor a better future in the village. In such a situation, he sent Bobby to Tanakpur and from here Bobby’s hockey journey started.
Team India’s journey from Tanakpur
Bobby’s maternal uncle was a former national hockey player and coach. He saw talent in Bobby and started training Bobby. Bobby soon reached Maharama Pratap Sports College, Dehradun. At that time he was studying in the sixth grade. By the time he reached class 12, he had become a part of Sai’s Sonepat center. He was selected as an alternate player for the World Cup. Team’s star Maninder Singh was injured in the last match of the pool. Team coach Graham Reid gave Bobby a chance. He could not score in the Belgium match. However, in the semi-final match, he scored against Germany.
