The Indian team won the first season of the ICC T20 Cricket World Cup tournament under the captaincy of Mahendra Singh Dhoni. He won the title by defeating his arch-rivals Pakistan by 5 runs in the final match played in Johannesburg, South Africa. This exciting match was decided on the last ball of the match. Joginder Sharma is still remembered for that memorable over. With this victory, Dhoni proved himself as a captain for the first time.

The 2012 World Cup was held in Sri Lanka. The West Indies team won the T20 World Cup for the first time under the captaincy of Darren Sammy. Despite a poor start, the Caribbean team managed to win the title. In the semi-final match, the West Indies team defeated Australia, while defeating Sri Lanka by 36 runs in the final, they won the cup.

In 2014, the T20 World Cup was held in Bangladesh. India had a strong challenge in front of Sri Lanka in the title match at Sher-e-Bangla Stadium in Mirpur. Sri Lanka had lost four finals of the global tournament. This was the last chance for the team under the captaincy of Kumar Sangakkara. India’s team gave a target of only 131 runs to Sri Lanka, which was easily achieved by Sangakkara’s team.
