Australia had given Sri Lanka a target of 292 runs in the third ODI, which the hosts achieved 9 balls ago.
Sri Lanka badly washed Australia in the third ODI match played in Colombo. Sri Lanka won the 3rd ODI by 6 wickets on the back of Pathum Nisanka’s tremendous century to take a 2-1 lead in the 5-match series. After losing the first match of the series, Sri Lanka won the next two matches. After almost 19 years, it was such an amazing thing that Sri Lanka defeated Australia in 2 consecutive ODIs. Batting first, Australia set the hosts a target of 292 runs, which Sri Lanka achieved by losing 4 wickets in 9 balls. Pathum Nisanka, who played a tremendous innings of 137 runs in 147 balls, was the player of the match. This was the first century of Nisanka’s ODI career. At the same time, Kusal Mendis played a quick innings of 87 runs. Sri Lanka set the record for the highest ODI target achieved at the R Premadasa Stadium.
Head and Maxwell’s stormy innings
Electing to bat after winning the toss, the Australian team scored 291 runs for 6 wickets in the allotted over. Australia had a very poor start. However, Travis Head scored an unbeaten 70, captain Aaron Finch made 62 and Alex Carey tried to handle the innings with 49 runs. At one point Australia had lost 5 wickets for 193 runs. After this Travis Head and Glenn Maxwell showed their form. Head remained unbeaten on 70. While Maxwell played an important role in taking 33 runs off 18 balls to take Australia’s innings to 291 runs. Geoffrey Vandersay got 3 successes.
