Ricky Ponting has been the coach of Delhi Capitals for three seasons while Rishabh Pant has become the captain for the first time in IPL 2021.
Mahendra Singh Dhoni played in his old colors in the first qualifier of IPL 2021, giving Chennai Super Kings a thrilling four-wicket win over Delhi Capitals. In reply to the target of 173 runs, Chennai needed 13 runs in the last over. MS Dhoni gave the team victory by hitting three fours on fast bowler Tom Karan. Earlier, he had hit a six in the midwicket area on Avesh Khan. In this way, Dhoni remained unbeaten on 18 runs in six balls and took CSK to the IPL final for the ninth time. But after this result, questions have been raised on Delhi Capitals getting Tom Curran to last over. Many people said that when Kagiso Rabada had one over left, he should have given the last over.
Ricky Ponting’s reply to Delhi Capitals’ on this decision also came to the fore. While separating himself from the case, he has said that Rishabh Pant has been implicated. Ricky Ponting said after the match that the captain should be asked about Tom Curran getting the last over. Such decisions are taken on the field. It depends what the captain thinks. Tom Karan bowled well till the last over was bowled. He took two wickets for only 16 runs in three overs. On the other hand, Kagiso Rabada did not get any success but he gave 23 runs in three overs. In such a situation, Karan’s performance was good but experts believed that Rabada is very experienced and he is a better bowler than Karan. In such a situation, the bet of the last over should be played on him.
Ponting praised Dhoni a lot
Delhi Capitals coach Ricky Ponting also praised the CSK captain. “He (Dhoni) is one of the greats of the game. We were sitting in the dugout thinking whether the next batsman would be Ravindra Jadeja or Dhoni and I said Dhoni would come to bat and try to finish the match. See, when he quits playing, retires, I think he will definitely be remembered as one of the best finishers of this game.
Ponting said that the Delhi bowlers failed to bowl according to the strategy against Dhoni. “We didn’t do what we should have bowled for Dhoni in those last two overs and you know if you miss, you will have to pay the price in front of him (Dhoni). He has been doing this for a long time.
