Pakistan defeated West Indies by 120 runs in the second ODI in Multan to take their three-match series 2-0 and it was dominated by left-arm spinner Mohammad Nawaz.
There is a popular dialogue from the famous Hindi web series Mirzapur – Started in compulsion, now enjoying it. This dialogue tells the main character of the film, Guddu Pandit, while telling about his habit of bloodshed. For Pakistan spinner Mohammad Nawaz, its cricket form is something like this – started with fast bowling, now enjoying spin. 28-year-old left-arm spinner Mohammad Nawaz has recently made a comeback in the Pakistani team and he has also proved himself by performing at his best. On the basis of Nawaz’s excellent bowling, Pakistan won the series by defeating West Indies by a huge margin of 120 runs in the second ODI.
The second match of this series being played in Multan took place on Friday 10 June, in which Pakistan’s batting failed to perform as expected. Once again for the team, only captain Babar Azam and opener Imam-ul-Haq could bat fiercely. Both scored more than fifty in the sixth consecutive innings and wrote their names in the list of legends. Babar and Imam shared a 120-run partnership for the second wicket, which gave Pakistan hope of a big score.
Pakistani middle order flop
A misunderstanding between Babar and Imam, however, proved to be harmful for both of them and also for the team, leading to Imam being run out and then the team’s middle order faltering. Babar also missed the record of a century in the fourth consecutive match. In the end, Shaheen Afridi hit 15 runs in 6 balls to take the team to 275 runs. Akil Hossain took 3 wickets for West Indies.
Nawaz pulled out the strength of Windies including Puran-Powell
In response, West Indies’ batting looked utterly battered. Only the fast partnership of 67 runs for the second wicket between opener Kyle Meyers and Shamrah Brooks looked strong. After the dismissal of these two, the Windies innings were devastated and 28-year-old spinner Nawaz played an important role in this. Apart from Brooks, traditional left-arm spinner Nawaz broke the back of West Indies’ batting by taking the wickets of West Indies captain Pooran, explosive batsman Rovman Powell and Brandon King. Windies team were bundled out for just 155 runs.
Started with fast bowling, spin made career
Nawaz spent only 19 runs in his 10 overs and took 4 wickets. There was not a single four or six against him. Nawaz made his debut for Pakistan in 2016, but he has played only 18 matches so far and this was his best performance. The special thing is that Nawaz started his cricket career as a medium pacer, but during the Under-15 Championship, he converted himself into a spinner and from there he achieved continuous success. Nawaz has got 25 wickets in 18 ODIs so far.
