Shane Bond got a new responsibility in the New Zealand team.
When the support staff is appointed in a cricket team, it is according to the specialty. For example, only a former batsman will be made the batting coach. Similarly, only a former fast bowling coach will be appointed as the fast bowling coach and only a former spinner will be appointed as the spin bowling coach. Usually this happens, but New Zealand Cricket has done something different this time. The decision taken by New Zealand is a bit awkward and also surprising. New Zealand Cricket has appointed former fast bowler Shane Bond to work exclusively with the spinners of the national team during the T20 World Cup.
Bond will remain with the team as the fourth coach. He will assist bowling coach Shane Jurgensen, working with the team’s spinners. New Zealand head coach Gary Stead told New Zealand Cricket, “He is working exclusively with spin bowlers. It’s good when you see a large number of bowlers. This will help Shane (Jurgensen). He is working exclusively with the spinners and deciding the strategy. Bond has joined the team after Mumbai (Indians) got out (from the Indian Premier League).
Bond is also the bowling coach of Mumbai Indians.
Coach trusts the captain
New Zealand team captain Kane Williamson suffered a muscle strain during an IPL match last week. Williamson has joined the New Zealand team after the IPL. Other players who are associated with the team from IPL include James Neesham and Adam Milne. Stead is confident that his team’s main batsman Kane Williamson will be fit before the team’s first match against Pakistan on 26 October. Williamson could not play the last league match for Sunrisers Hyderabad but Stead said that his injury is not a concern. He said, “Kane is fit. There is a slight strain in his muscles, but now he is feeling well. His team (Sunrisers Hyderabad) was also out of the competition and I can’t say for sure that this must have been one of the reasons for him not playing.” Williamson has joined the New Zealand team after the IPL. Other players who are associated with the team from IPL include James Neesham and Adam Milne.
