New Delhi: Some new rules are going to come in the new season of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2023) and there has been a lot of discussion on the Impact Player rule, through which teams will get a chance to replace one player each in every match. There is enthusiasm among the fans about this substitute rule of football style, but whether the IPL teams are also happy or excited about it, this is a big question. The latest statement of former Australian captain and Delhi Capitals coach Ricky Ponting is indicating that he is not a big fan of this rule and he is worried about certain players.
The new season of the league is to start from March 31, in which Gujarat Titans and Chennai Super Kings will clash in the first match. With this match, some new rules will be entered in this season. The impact player is one of them, which was first tried in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy last year. Under this, each team will give the names of 4 additional players in the team sheet. They can replace any one of these players during their batting or bowling. That is, the team batting first can get the bowler out by getting a batsman out at the time of bowling.
The role of all-rounders will decrease
Delhi’s coach, however, is not much impressed by this rule. He believes that this will especially reduce the importance of all-rounders. On Friday, March 24, during the media interaction of Delhi Capitals, Ponting was questioned about this new rule, on which Ponting expressed the possibility of reducing the role of all-rounders. The Australian veteran predicted that teams would field a batting or bowling heavy playing XI and then replace a player in it as per the need and in such a situation the chances of all-rounders getting a place in the playing XI would be less. Ponting admitted that if an all-rounder is likely to get a chance only on the ability to play as a pure batsman or bowler.
Had I known before the auction…
Ponting also pointed out an important point that the teams came to know about this new rule only after the auction. The players’ auction for the IPL 2023 season was held in December 2023. Ponting admitted that if the teams had known about this rule before the auction, they would have adopted a different strategy to buy players.
