Lalit Upadhyay is the defender of the Indian team
Many times players get caught in the headlines due to wrong reasons by getting caught in controversy and scandal. Sometimes this news is correct and sometimes completely baseless. After being caught in such a false controversy, the Indian Hockey Team player Lalit Upadhyay had made up his mind to leave the game forever at a time. However, with the love of family and former Indian captain Dhanraj Pillai, he gave him courage and today he is the star defender of Team India.
Lalit started playing hockey at the age of 11. Hockey was played in his school and his elder brother was also associated with it, so he had to have a tendency towards this game. The effect of his talent was that he started training with the under-21 team within four. However, after this, a controversy overcame almost all his hopes of playing for his team India.
Lalit was caught in a sting operation in 2008
In 2008, a sting operation was carried out in which some reporters went to Hockey India chief K Jyothikumaran at the time with a proposal for a sponsorship deal. He told Jyotikumaran that if any player from Uttar Pradesh plays for Team India, then the deal will be given to them. When it came to take the name of the player, Jyothikumaran took the name of Lalit. After this dispute, Jyothikumaran was removed from his place, but the battle of removing the stains in his name started for Lalit.
Lalit did not know anything about this deal. He was accused of making a place in the team by paying money and for this reason, the selectors also shied away from giving him a chance. After continuous rejections, Lalit had made up his mind to leave the game. At such a time, his family supported him and said that quitting the game would mean that he was accepting the allegations leveled against him. He kept practicing in the Sai Center and also waited for his turn. At such a time, he got the support of former captain Dhanraj Pillai.
Dhanraj showed confidence in Lalit and gave him a chance to play like Air India. Lalit was just waiting for this opportunity. In 2012, he was voted ‘Rookie of the Year’ in the Hockey World Series tournament. Only two years later, he made his senior team debut in 2014. After this, in the years 2016 and 2018, he was also a part of the Asian Champions Trophy winning team. He became an important part of the frontline of the team while being the coach of Graham Reid and is also an important part of the team for the Tokyo Olympics today.
