Shiva Keshavan is India’s Star Winter Olympian
India’s star Winter Olympian Shiva Keshawan will soon be seen as a part of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). Shiva Keshavan has decided to participate in the election to become a member of the IOC’s Players Commission. These elections will be held during the Winter Olympics to be held in China next year. Apart from Shiva Keshavan, 17 more people have submitted claims for the two vacant seats. Shiva Keshavan has participated in six Winter Olympic Games for India.
“17 National Olympic Committees (NOCs), 10 female and seven male players from five sports and five continents will submit candidatures for the two vacant positions in the Commission,” the IOC said in a statement along with the list of 17 candidates. According to the statement, ‘their respective NOCs and the NOC Players Commission have jointly nominated them.’ Indian Olympic Association Secretary General Rajeev Mehta confirmed that he has nominated Keshavan. Mehta told PTI, “Yes, the IOA has nominated him (Keshavan) for the IOC Players Commission. As far as Winter Olympics is concerned, he is the most suitable player.
Keshavan has participated in Olympic Games six times
Keshavan has been a part of the Lush men’s singles event of the Winter Olympics since the 1998 Nagano Games in Japan. He was the Asian Champion in 2011, 2012, 2016 and 2017 and holds the Asian record in Lush. Keshavan and cross country skiing player Jagdish Singh represented India at the PyeongChang 2018 Winter Games. The commission, which acts as a link between the players and the IOC, consists of a maximum of 23 members, 12 of whom are directly selected by the players while a maximum of 11 are appointed. Their tenure is of eight years.
Elections are held during every Olympics
Elections are held during each Olympics. Four members are elected in each Summer Olympics, while two members are elected in the Winter Olympics. Athletes participating in the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics will be able to vote to choose their representative at the Olympic Games Village from January 27 (the day the Games Village opens) to February 16. The selected players will replace the current members of the IOC Players Commission, Hailey Wickenheiser of Canada and Ole Anner Bourdalen of Norway. Haley’s term is coming to an end while Ole resigned in 2016. The Winter Olympics will be held in Beijing from February 4 to 20 next year.
