The Indian team had to bear the brunt of slow and loose batting. Batting first after losing the toss, India could reach 201 runs for eight wickets in the stipulated 50 overs.
The England women’s cricket team defeated India in the first ODI in a one-sided fashion.
With the help of an unbroken century partnership between opener Tammy Beaumont and all-rounder Natalie Siever, England defeated India by eight wickets in the first Women’s One Day International (ODI) match. The hosts won the match with 15.1 overs remaining. With this, he took a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. The Indian team had to bear the brunt of slow and loose batting. Batting first after losing the toss, India could reach 201 for eight in 50 overs despite captain Mithali Raj’s 72 runs in 108 balls. England did not have a big target and made the match one-sided by scoring 202 for two in 34.5 overs.
Beaumont (87 off 87 balls) and Siever (74 off 74 balls) were the heroines of this easy win for England. Both of them shared an unbroken partnership of 119 runs for the third wicket. Beaumont hit 12 fours and a six while Sivar hit 10 fours and a six. Beaumont scored his fourth consecutive and 13th overall, while Sciver scored his 15th half-century. Chasing the target, Lauren Winfield Hill (16) was caught by Jhulan Goswami at the hands of wicketkeeper Tania Bhatia in the fifth over but Beaumont did not let the pressure build on the team. Beaumont put on 59 runs for the second wicket with captain Heather Knight (18), in which he contributed 41 runs. Experienced Ekta Bisht broke this partnership by bowling Knight.
Siever did not just play Beaumont’s ally and scored faster than his teammate. He hit the first six of the match on Harmanpreet Kaur. Later Beaumont also equalized the score by hitting a six on Harmanpreet.
India’s batting was slow
Earlier, despite captain Mithali Raj’s 56th half-century in her career, the Indian women’s team could not recover from the initial setbacks and slow batting till the end and could only manage 201 runs for eight wickets. Mithali, the highest run-scorer in women’s ODI, stepped into the crease in the 10th over and scored 72 runs in 108 balls which included seven fours. He put on useful partnerships of 65 runs off 85 balls for the third wicket with Poonam Raut (32 off 61 balls) and 56 off 94 balls for the third wicket with Deepti Sharma (30 off 46 balls). But due to slow batting and not getting enough runs in the last five overs, India could not make a challenging score.
Shefali made a record
For England, left-arm spinner Sophie Ecclestone took three wickets for 40 runs. These include the valuable wickets of Harmanpreet Kaur and Mithali. Fast bowlers Katherine Brunt and Anya Shrubsole took two wickets each. Shefali Verma (15 runs off 14 balls) and Smriti Mandhana (10 runs off 25 balls), who played their first ODI for the Indian team to bat first after losing the toss, could not get the expected start. Shefali, who made the record for the youngest debut in all three formats of cricket, started playing her shots from the beginning. He hit two consecutive fours on Katherine but this fast bowler tested him with short pitch balls. Shefali gave an easy catch on one such ball. Mandhana got bowled in an attempt to cut late on Shrubsole’s ball.
India played 188 dot balls
Mithali batted very slowly in the beginning and in the meantime Poonam also could not show the pace. Indian team reached 50 runs in 16 overs. After this, the pressure on the team increased due to the return of both Poonam and Harmanpreet (one) inside the pavilion. The score became 84 for four but Mithali kept the wicket and rotated the strike with Deepti. India’s score was 134 for four after 40 overs. After this both of them showed their intentions but Deepti was dismissed leg before by Shrubsole. Earlier in the same over, Mithali had completed her half-century by hitting a four at midwicket.
Mithali did not stay at the crease till the end, which affected the Indian score. She hit two consecutive fours in the next over of Shrubsole but Ecclestone’s arm could not guess the ball correctly and got bowled. After this India could only add 21 runs in the last 27 balls. In the lower order, only Pooja Vastrakar (15) could contribute something. India played 188 dot balls during their batting. It is clear from this that the Indian batsmen could not consistently score runs. Because of this his target was insufficient.
