The Kanpur Test between India and New Zealand ended in a thrilling draw. India needed 9 wickets on the last day of the match, while New Zealand had to score 280 runs. Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin in the second and third sessions, on the basis of excellent spells, the Indian team came close to victory and took 9 wickets, but for the last wicket, Rachin Ravindra and Ejaz Patel batted till the last 8.4 overs. Then the last minute game was ruined by bad light. In this way, New Zealand saved itself from falling behind in the series by preventing India from winning. New Zealand scored 165 runs for the loss of 9 wickets in their second innings. Ravindra remained unbeaten on 18 off 91 balls, while Ravindra Jadeja took 4 wickets for 40 runs for India.
India had scored 345 runs in the first innings of this test. Shreyas Iyer scored a century in the debut for India, while Shubman Gill and Ravindra Jadeja scored half-centuries. After this, despite the half-centuries of Will Young and Tom Latham, the Kiwi team was reduced to just 296 runs and India got a lead of 49 runs. India declared their second innings for 234 runs on the fourth day and by the end of the day’s play had also taken a wicket of New Zealand.
Shreyas Iyer innings
Shreyas Iyer did the work of laying the foundation for India’s victory. Iyer, making his Test debut, scored a brilliant century in the first innings and then in the second innings, when Team India lost 5 wickets for just 51 runs, once again scored a half-century at the crease and got it in a strong position. Iyer scored 105 runs in the first innings, while 65 runs in the second innings.
Strong partnership of the lower order in the second innings
In the second innings, the Indian team was in trouble and needed partnerships to save it. If the top order failed, the lower order took the lead. Apart from supporting Shreyas Iyer, Ravichandran Ashwin, Wriddhiman Saha and Axar Patel took the team to a score of 234. Together these three contributed 121 runs.
Kane Williamson’s Big Mistake
New Zealand had a chance to win the match by bringing India under pressure in this match. On the fourth day of the match, India had lost 4 wickets in the first session itself and the team’s score was just 51 runs for 5 wickets. India’s lead was only 100 runs. In such a situation, the New Zealand captain had an opportunity to attack, but instead of putting Tim Southee and Kyle Jamieson on the attack, Williamson bowled the ineffective spinner Will Somerville and India got themselves out of the difficult situation.
spin bowling difference
Both the teams had kept 3-3 spinners in the playing XI as expected for this match. For India, the responsibility was on Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja and Axar, while for New Zealand, it was on Ejaz Patel, Will Summerville and debutant Rachin Ravindra. India’s experienced spin trio brought New Zealand’s batsmen to their knees in both the innings. Fast bowler Umesh Yadav took only 2 wickets from India in both the innings. The remaining 17 wickets were taken by the spinners. In comparison, New Zealand’s inexperienced spinners could not make any impact. Out of the 17 wickets that fell in both the innings of India, only 3 wickets went to spinner Ejaz Patel.
