The second day of the fourth Test match being played against England at the Oval ground was mixed for India on Friday. India did not allow England to take a big lead at first and then made a slow start in their second innings. India scored 43 runs without losing a wicket in their second innings till the end of the second day of the match. The Indian team was bundled out for just 191 runs in the first innings. After this, England scored 290 runs and took a 99-run lead over India. India is still 56 runs behind England. At the end of the day’s play, Rohit Sharma returned unbeaten on 20 and his partner KL Rahul scored 22 runs.
India ended England’s innings in the last session of the day. Umesh Yadav took three wickets for India. Ravindra Jadeja and Jasprit Bumrah took two wickets each. The Indian team was all out on the very first day of the match. For that, Shardul Thakur scored 57 runs in 36 balls. His innings included seven fours and three sixes. Captain Virat Kohli played an innings of 50 runs. KL Rahul scored 17 runs. England had started their first innings on the very first day and by the end of the day’s play were 53 runs for the loss of three wickets.
Pope takes over England
On the second day, England’s score had increased by only 10 runs that David Malan was out. Umesh Yadav showed him the way to the pavilion. He scored 31 runs. After this Pope got the support of Jonny Bairstow and both shared an 89-run partnership for the sixth wicket. India could not break this partnership till lunch. In the second session of the day, Bairstow was dismissed by Mohammad Siraj and this partnership was broken. Bairstow’s wicket fell on the total score of 151. But then Moeen Ali supported the Pope and took England ahead of India’s score and gave it the lead. Moeen Ali was moving towards his half-century, but Ravindra Jadeja took the wicket of Moeen Ali on a personal score of 35. In the midst of all this, the Pope completed his half-century. He was on his way to a century. But Shardul Thakur bowled him on a total score of 250 and dashed his dreams. Five runs later, Jadeja made Olly Robinson his second victim.
Woakes struggled
Even after the departure of the Pope, the road to India was not easy. Fast bowler Chris Woakes, who was returning from this match, also troubled India. He played an innings of 50 runs and further strengthened England’s lead. Woakes faced 60 balls and hit 11 fours in his innings.
