Today is the birthday of Sourav Ganguly, the former captain of the Indian cricket team. He turns 49 today. Many Indian players had debuted under the captaincy of Sourav Ganguly and later on they became big names. One of these names is Dinesh Karthik. This wicket-keeper batsman had stepped into the Indian team from the tour of England. But a funny anecdote happened with Karthik during this time. Sourav Ganguly was also involved in this incident. In fact, in the early days of his career, when Karthik was not a part of the playing XI once, he collided with Sourav Ganguly standing in the team huddle while carrying water. He was scolded by the then Indian captain on this. Later he also got the nickname ‘Chhota Cheeka’. Karthik had disclosed about this on a YouTube show.

He said that this was his debut series and during this a very funny but embarrassing incident happened. Karthik said, ‘It is about the 2004 Champions Trophy. Dada was the captain then. I was 18-19 years old then. There was a match against Pakistan and I was not part of the playing XI. It was a do or die match. Whoever wins it will go ahead. We got out for less than 200. Then we started with good bowling. The match was going well. There were two wickets at 60, then three wickets at 60. Then there was a partnership between Yusuf Yohana and Inzamam-ul-Haq. They took the score to 120-130 and then the wicket fell.

Karthik further added,
Then I was a substitute, so whenever the wicket fell, I would go to the ground with water. Then Dada started making huddles (round circles) in the team. In such a situation, when the wicket fell, I went running. There was a lot of tension in the match and the most important wicket was dropped. If one more wicket had fallen, it would have become a matter. I had 12 bottles of water in my hand. I knew where to stop but could not stop because of the grass. So I went straight to Dada and hit him and he went two-three steps ahead of his place. Then Dada turned to me and said, From where do you bring such people? Who is this?
Karthik got the short name Cheeka
Karthik further told that he was very young and survived because of this. But after this incident he was called Chhota Cheeka. Cheeka is the nickname of former India cricketer Kris Srikkanth. He is also known for his funny style. For this reason, Dinesh Karthik was also called Chhota Cheeka in Team India later. Karthik is currently in England and doing commentary.
