In IPL 2021, 41-year-old Harbhajan Singh played a few matches for Kolkata Knight Riders but did not play a single match in the UAE leg of the league.
Harbhajan Singh has played for only three teams in IPL.
Former India off-spinner Harbhajan Singh will be seen as an important member of the support staff of a major IPL franchise next year. In the first leg of the last IPL, 41-year-old Harbhajan played a few matches for Kolkata Knight Riders but did not play a single match in the UAE leg of the league. Harbhajan is expected to officially announce his retirement from cricket next week and after that he is expected to accept one of the offers to join the support staff of some of the franchises.
An IPL source told PTI on condition of anonymity, “The role could be to be an advisor, mentor or part of an advisory group but the franchise he is talking to wants to use his experience.” He will also play an active role in helping the franchise in selecting the players in the auction. Harbhajan has always shown an interest in grooming players and that was his role with the team in his later years while being associated with Mumbai Indians for a decade.
During his association with KKR last year, Harbhajan spent a lot of time guiding Varun Chakraborty. Venkatesh Iyer, who was searching for last season of IPL, had earlier revealed that Harbhajan had said after a few net sessions before he did not play a single match for KKR that he would be successful in the league. Even last season, KKR head coach Brendon McCullum and captain Ouen Morgan followed Harbhajan’s advice in matters of team selection.
The source said, “Harbhajan wants to make a formal announcement of retirement after the session is over. He has spoken in detail with one of the franchisees which has shown a lot of interest but he would love to talk about it only after the formalities of the contract are completed.
