Former football player Babu Mani, one of India’s best forward players, died on Saturday at the age of 59. The All India Football Federation (AIFF) has condoled his death. Mani made his international debut in 1984 in the Nehru Cup in Kolkata. He played 55 international matches for India. Mani was part of the Indian team that qualified for the AFC Asian Cup in 1984.
He played the entire tournament in Singapore. The biggest achievement of his career was the 1984 Asia Cup. Apart from this, Mani won the gold medal twice in the SAF Games. He had won these medals in 1985 and 1987. He also played for India’s famous football club East Bengal.

AIFF expressed grief
AIFF has issued a statement expressing grief over his death. The statement quoted AIFF President Kalyan Choubey as saying, “I am deeply saddened to hear that Babu Mani, one of the finest football players of his time, has passed away. We will always remember him for his contribution to Indian football. My prayers are with his family in this difficult time.
AIFF General Secretary Shaji Prabhakaran said, “Babu Mani was known for his excellent play on the football pitch. He has proved to be an excellent footballer and has inspired many young players. My condolences are with his family. May his soul rest in peace.

In domestic football, Babu Mani had won the Santosh Trophy title twice. He lifted the trophy with Bengal in 1986 and 1988. He played in three big clubs of Kolkata and was successful in winning big trophies. He won the Federation Cup in 1983 with Mohammedan Sporting. He also won CFL, IFL Shield, Durand Cup, Rovers Cup, Federation Cup with Mohun Bagan, CFL Cup, IFA Shield, Durand Cup, Rovers Cup with East Bengal.
